50th Anniversary of the Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science is proud to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its founding in 1964.

The Department kicked off its year-long 50th Anniversary celebration on October 18th, 2014. You can read all about the event by clicking this link.

Additionally, photos taken at the Kick-off event have been posted on Flickr. If you took photos and would like to share them with us, please email 50th @ cs.unc.edu.

The History of the Department series continues in this issue of the News & Notes. Click here to read excerpts from Peter Calingaert's "Growth of a Department" covering the period of 1970-1980.

To help catalog the Department's history, we have begun a timeline of important events in the founding and growth of the Department. The timeline begins in 1955 and will be updated continually through the academic year until it reaches the present day. The timeline exhibits artifacts like these that have been collected by Anna Snyder.

Please remember to visit cs.unc.edu/ 50th to stay up-to-date on all of our 50th Anniversary events and see pieces of the department's history.

The 50th Anniversary Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series has begun! Click the link for the full schedule of speakers. If you were not able to attend the talks by Julia Grace (M.S. 2007), Lee Nackman (Ph.D. 1982), or Matt Cutts (M.S. 1998), you can watch a recording online at cs.unc.edu/50th/alumni-speaker-series/videos.

The next speaker will be Dick Sites, senior staff engineer at Google. We hope you can join us in Chapel Hill on February 23rd. Click here for more information and to register.

In honor of the 50th Anniversary, the Department has established The Toolsmith Endowment Fund, which will build a sustainable discretionary funding base to support undergraduate student projects, graduate student fellowships, course development, and other important and urgent departmental needs.
